My wife and I thought about attending our first Cornerstone this year and making the big road trip we never had. When Stavesacre was announced, the discussion was over: we were going. We were so excited to finally see Stavesacre when neither my wife nor myself ever thought we would have the opportunity.
The concert was more than either of us could have expected. The setlist hit all the bases, the band was a treat to watch, and the atmosphere was beautiful (once you're out here). Strangely, it felt "home." I felt like I found a place where I could breathe. Also: it rocked! In every way worth 2500 miles of driving.
On the way home I listened to every Stavesacre album as well as Bull Takes Fighter & Against The Silence which I picked up at Cornerstone (except Friction, which I need to get, but I do have Collective) twice, some songs more. The live performance completely enhanced my love of the group's music and gave me appreciation I did not prior have for Absolutes. "At The Moment" has taken on so much amazing power after the performance. Even the self-titled album's goodness shone through the mediocre production/engineering and I shouted along to Blind Hope. "Loving takes more time for some of us" indeed.
Stavesacre is my favorite group. I do not make that statement with the idolatry and over-exuberance of my teenage years, but in sheer awe that any band could produce music that resonates so completely in my heart, sinew, bones and fluid, a tuning fork to my exact frequency. The music satisfies my need for rock and for balladry, for catharsis and healing, for faith and questioning, for unique and interesting musicianship and heartfelt songwriting. Genuine and honest, and sometimes even just fun.
Thank you Mark, Dirk, Jeff, Sam, Ryan. I do not worship you or think you are better than me. I just want you to know that your art is awesome and I am thankful for its existence, even as words fail me and nothing I write seems to appropriately express the sentiment. You know how it is. =)
