The musical stylings on that track for some reason gave me a Stavesacre vibe even the first time I heard it. Obviously not the vocals, just the music at parts was giving me Stavesacre flashbacks. Heh. Just thought I'd share...

Thanks for sharing. I didn't realize Chevelle was out with a new disc. Some of the Amazon reviews are saying it's more monotonous than This Type of Thinking..., with none of the bright spots. And apparently Pete said this album is mostly unreleased stuff they had already written - i.e. little fresh thinking went into it.
Is it worth the $12+ it'll cost me, or shall I wait a year so I can get it for $0.99 + S+H?

Honestly? I downloaded it and did the first run through with a lyrics site in front of me (just a habit for first run-thru of any music so I don't end up thinking the singer is singing something else and look stupid later ) and the album didn't really catch me at all. On the second run through I found I actually liked about half the songs. Since I planned to hang onto the mp3s I went out and grabbed the disc at BestBuy today. For me the first run-thru was kinda wishing I'd hear some songs more like the ones I liked off their earlier albums, but the second listen I knew what to expect and could appreciate the newer sounds a bit more I guess. I'm also a sucker for the drumming on songs like Brainiac.

I find 'Vena Sera' to be a big step-up from 'This Kind of Thinking...' My favorite track is 'I Get It'- I love heavy songs with acoustic guitar. Album is still weak compared to 'Wonder What's Next'.

Yeah, I actually like this new cd of theirs pretty well - IMO its way more solid that This Type of Thinking (which I like ok too) and at the moment at least I prefer it to Wonder What's Next, but that just might be a matter of freshness.
Last sunday I found out that they were playing a show up here where I currently reside (in Burlington VT, of all places) the very next night, so I figured it was providence and I should go see them and ... meh. Kind of suck live. Well, they did just have all their gear stolen, so I don't know if that's an excuse or not. But yeah, some bands like Stavesacre you see live and it breathes new life into the songs - but watching Chevelle last week I kept finding myself thinking "man, they must have some fancy production magic going on to get the cd sounding good."

So which Chevelle songs do you guys like most? I like almost all of the tracks on Point #1, to the point (lol) that I can just play the entire album through. From WWN I like Family System, Don't Fake This, and An Evening with El Diablo. From TTOTCDUI I like The Clincher, Get Some, and Another Know-It-All From the new album I can't name standouts yet besides Brainiac. Gotta listen to it a few more times. update: Straight Jacket Fashion is starting to stand out for me, as is Well Enough Alone. Also, the intro riff on "Humanoid" really sounds similar to Ozzy's "Perry Mason" to me.

LOVE this disc - a huge surprise, as Chevelle was always one of those bands I felt fairly agnostic about. It has a pretty agressive sound that reminds me of Helmet at times. But they also slow it down and change it up in their this-is-what-TOOL-would-sound-like-of-they-still-wrote-shorter-songs style.

I can't really say at this point that I like it better than This Type Of Thinking, or Wonder What's Next, but it is close, and definately better than Point #1 to me. I've always seen that cd as sort of a beginners effort, which it is, but it's no where near as good as Chevelle's newer stuff. All in all Vena Sera is an awesome CD, Chevelle at this point is pretty much the only Mainstream band I listen to, I've always found them more unique and better than rest of that crap on the radio, which is why I haven't listened to the radio in like 3 years.

So, to some, Chevelle sounds like Stavesacre.
I note that of late, Chevelle is at the top of the charts.
Why didn't it happen to Stavesacre?

I honestly don't know man. Of all the bands I like that have never "made it" (and there's a lot of those) Stavesacre's always been the main one that I've never understood why. I think maybe it was because of Mark's vocals. Not because his voice is bad (he's one of my all-time favorite singers) but because they probably thought it wasn't "accessible" enough for main stream. It's sad, but things like that happen all the time.

I love Vena Sera. Easily my fave Chevelle album so far. I'm kinda like Andy I was always sort of iffy about Chevelle, but after this new album they have my complete attention.
