For the longest time I hated Truthless Heroes. HATED it. I'm not a fan of Project's first album either, but that's because it's bad rap-rock. Drawing Black Lines is amazing and heavy; Heroes was just such a let down.
The first time I saw Project live, they did two tracks from Heroes (Little Green Men/Hollow Again). The sheer intensity and force drove me to check them out again. I still don't own it, but I bought four tracks off of iTunes. It's a great record. I can see where it's been corporately squeezed and manufactured (as per Schwab's book, mentioned above) but it's a "thick" record emotionally and has some great songs. "Another Boredom Movement" is outstanding.
Looking forward to the band's sixth disc this June.

Finally got around to picking up Truthless Heroes, got a brand new copy from eBay. All I have to say is, wow. Though flawed in places, the organization, strucuture and overall song quality - knowledge of all the bullshit that was going at the time notwithstanding - is great. I find it interesting that the band didn't "front load" the disc with the "singles" per se - Hollow Again is the final track. The interludes work well.
And I never knew that Mark Salomon did guest vocals on a Project 86 song until a few days ago. That was awesome.

I've got several of Project's albums, but I don't think I have Truthless Heroes. I'd rate them:
debut - meh Drawing Black Lines - quite good, but I haven't listened to it in a while. Songs to Burn your Bridges By - a hit or three, but this album never grabbed me. And the Rest will Follow - this is the record that got me following P86 again. Pretty solid from start to finish. Hopefully their new disc will be in this vein.

Songs to Burn your Bridges By - a hit or three, but this album never grabbed me. This album had the best song they ever recorded, in my opinion. That song being the final track Solace. By the time the end of the song the intensity has built up to a level that they have never matched.

Live DVD please. Thank you. Word! how about a live cd/dvd simul-release or combo. Like someone said above, having seen P86 live (havin't seen them at a festival, but I don't see how it could compare to the experience seeing them in a small venue, wiht so much noice and energy packed into a tight space) has brought me new appreciation for quite afew of the songs that I was not particularly my favorites of there's, particularly a few songs off of DBL. Anwyay, someone get these guys on the ball!

The most intense song for one of the most intense bands I've ever heard. StBYBY is my favorite album of theirs.

Got the new album this weekend. It is ok, you can tell that they are now trying, too much at that, to do something different. Andrew is about 2 tours away from having a great hardcore voice. The problem is evey song he is trying something different. If you are an old school Danzig fan or Type O Negative fan you will like some of the songs. The music if far more catchy. Song 1 and 3 stand out. The rest just songs.

I'm a fan of the new record. It's very different and definitely drawing from early eighties punk and even new wave. What it does not have is the brooding violent cathartic intensity of prior Project releases. However, it is not necessarily "lacking" because of that. It is instead very energetic, rocking and even fun. There is an element to the disc that is like a loose chaos... The lyrics are more sly, witty and cleverly skewering than "dark." record with some wicked bass and some fantastic grooves. It has more in common with NIN's "With Teeth" and some of Manson's more groovy material than "metal." "Pull Me Closer, Violent Dancer" is fabulous. "The Forces of Radio Have Dropped a Viper Into The Rhythm Section" is one of their best tracks period.
It is indeed a reinvention of sorts, and much in the way Truthless Heroes was a dramatic deparature from Drawing Black Lines, Rival Factions is a dramatic departure from ...And The Rest Will Follow. It is indeed more "accessible," but in this case, that word does not mean "sold out for radio play." Rival Factions is untrendy and unhip but is certainly not "old hat;" it is vibrant and full of life.
I think it will take the fanbase a while to appreciate the record. After all, the fans shit on Truthless Heroes when it first came out... it has become a fan-favorite in hindsight more often than not. But you know, I'm also of the opinion that "...and the rest will follow" was only good. It was not great. Had some great songs. But it sounded "tired" on half the tracks. I don't know if Rival Factions will or can have the same emotional connexion "songs to burn your bridges by" did for me. I enjoy it. We'll see how it lasts. The prior albums all have about six tracks that stay great forever and a bunch of others that are good but disposable. I do love the band though.

I went to the P86 concert in Tulsa this week and I have to say I wasn't impressed with the new songs. In their defense, the sound system wasn't the best, even the old "Drawing Black Lines" songs didn't sound great. They definately put on a more "rock" concert then hardcore...
I didn't have the money to buy the new album...but if its nothing like "..Black Lines", then I'm sure I'll be disappointed. I'll agree that Truthless Heroes did grow on me, as did ..The Rest Will Follow... as did Stavesacre's HTLWAC...which I consider their most artistic projects. For now, P86 is still in my top three.

Queen of Sheba, you must forgive me for this outburst, but (And I'm paraphrasing Grosse Pointe Blank)...
SEVEN YEARS! SEVEN YEARS MAN! "DRAWING BLACK LINES" WAS SEVEN YEARS AGO. SEVEN. SEEEEEVEENNNNN. They have not redone Drawing Black Lines since then and aren't going to start now! ARRRRGH! SEVEN YEARS!
Thank you.
I took Factions for the ultimate test today: Driving fast.
Hot damn I love this album.
(I can see how it might be too much of a shift for some fans to appreciate, and that's fine. I don't buy with any band "well it's not as good as that album all those years ago." Whether it's Delirious? (YES I KNOW HISTORY MAKER IT WAS NINE YEARS AGO), Joy Electric (MONOSYNTHHAHAFIVEFRIGGINGLPSSINCETHEN), Stavesacre or Project. Anyhoo.)

I'm really digging Rival Factions - every song stands out very distinctly from every other (a lot of songs on ..And the rest.. seem to run together to me). I like the use of keyboard/synth and how they're not shying away from poppier & more accessible sounds - like the song Illuminate, which is one of my favorites. Actually, I consider half the songs on the CD as favorites - Molotov, Slaves to Liberty, Illuminate, Sanctuary Hum, and Normandy. Probably my only complaint might be its maybe too short (just used to P86 cds that are longer than 10 songs I guess) I'm kind of pissed about the The Kane Mutiny itunes exclusive since I'm in no mood to buy the album twice. Does anyone have that song and feel generous enough to share it?

I don't, but Project have stated they are working to get the song available to fans in other ways. I also am not about to buy the album twice to get it, but hopefully it's available soon enough. =)

I really can't help but like Project.
I never disliked TH. In fact, I loved it when it first came out, and as long as I take long breaks in between, I still let it take over my stereo for a couple days at a time. It's a great album start to finish.
I haven't taken the time to let Rival Factions grow on me yet. I've only listened straight through it a couple times and I'm really not feeling it. I'm sure I'll come around.
I was in band that got to open for Project in Tulsa right before "..ATRWF". It was like a life dream had come true, because Project had always been one of my favorite bands and one of my bands' biggest influences. It was pretty amazing. And I still love them. I'm a bit burnt out on watching them live though. I've seen them about 7 times.

Now, it is one of my top 5 all time.
