So does everyone agree that the Lord of the Rings is the best book ever written?

I never read it, but I know that fireflights sure seem to enjoy the series. I highly recommend reading it Zone, but only if you have some time on your hands. It's very long.

IMO, the Silmarillion was better than the Red Book.

IMO, the Silmarillion was better than the Red Book. The Silmarillion was a good book too. Once you got past all the marching.

I love the Silmarillion. excellent book. better than the trilogy? imnot sure about that. Silmarillion had an excellent feel of believable history and is an essential companion to the LOTR but some of the stories arent great and the tales are disjointed. although im a fan of melancholy at least in LOTR something other then pain is achieved at the end, isnt it the end of LOTR amazing?its a happy ending but it has so much weight because Frodo isnt the same, the fellowship splits, and theres no more wizards or elves, victory was won but at such great cost. I think it reflects Tolkiens experience of being involved in WWII(or 1) being on the frontline and losing his closest friends.

Yeah, the stories were a bit jumpy, but hell, it was covering how many thousands of years? I know I'm in the minority, but I still liked it better. Did you ever see those crazy Bakshi LoTR animated movies from the early 80s? Majorly whacked out stuff, those.

i saw a couple old cartoons but im not sure who made them. all I remember is one of them ended with the battle of Helm's deep and Strider looked like a homeless hobo. in the other one they had some classy songs, my favorite one is Frodo of the Nine fingers and the ring of doom followed closely by When there's a Whip theres a Way "I dont want to work no more today but the master of the whip says, Nay, nay, nay". Are those the ones ur talking about?

The one that ended at helm's deep would have been the Bakshi "The Lord of the Rings". It was entirely rotoscoped, meaning they filmed actors doing the scenes, then drew the animation over the actors, giving sometimes really weird results.
The more musical one was "The Return of the King", directed by Rankin and Bass. That duo had previously made "The Hobbit" a few years prior.

i have many a good memory of singing "Frodo of the nine fingers and the ring of Dooooooom" horribly off pitch and laughing about the funky looking elves in Rivendell. fun stuff. Wasn't it wierd that they stopped the Bakshi cartoon at helms deep? totally ruined it

i've never got a chance to see the LOTR cartoons, but maybe that's a good thing. Unfortunately, i have had the misfortune of hearing those crazy songs fan101 talked about. i might have to agree with Carnage a little. i really enjoyed the Silmarillion. who's your favorite Valar?
